THE STORY BEHIND
The maple leaf is the national symbol in Canada, and it can be found in its flag and coins. In English-speaking countries, this tree was believed to repel demons and evil spirits. It was customary to have a piece of a maple tree in the main door. Furthermore, it is an important tree in the Celtic mythology. It was a tree consecrated to Dana, the Celtic goddess of fertility. It is also known as the tree of the tolerance. In China, maple is associated with honor, and its leaves are a motif in Japanese ukiyo-e paintings representing love and autumn.
THE ARTISTIC PROCESS
Each item is individually hand made. The scarf begins with natural white silk, then the artistic design is drawn by hand with a gutta resist.
WITH FRENCH SILK DYES the color is applied by hand with paint brushes creating brilliant results.
WHEN DRY the silk scarf is steam set to permanently set the color. Once steaming is complete each scarf is individually hand washed and ironed.
THESE ART PIECES take time and each are unique in their own way. I have made my best effort to show proper coloring of the silk and artwork in my photos,
THE FINISHED hand painted silk scarf is preshrunk and completely colorfast. Each scarf is hand cut and edges are hand rolled which may result in slight variations in the finished size.
SCARF SIZE approximately 9.5 " wide/ 70 " long 24 cm wide/ 177 cm long
